Wayne Newton to Open Home as Las Vegas Tourist Destination
Mr. Las Vegas, Wayne Newton will open his Las Vegas home to the public as soon as next February. The 40-acre Casa de Shenandoah estate will add a museum, visitor's center and other attractions for fans of the Vegas icon.
ÂÂ
The Las Vegas attraction was originally slated to open in December, but the project was delayed due to construction permits not being approved as quickly as planned. Now Casa de Shenandoah could open next month for a promotional tour and open to the general public by February 2012.
ÂÂ
Visitors to Newton's estate can expect to see the singer's collection of European antiques and celebrity items, such as Nat King Cole's watch, Johnny Cash's guitar and a champagne glass once used by Frank Sinatra. Also on the property, Newton has South African penguins and Arabian horses.ÂÂ
ÂÂ
The performer finally received permission to convert his home into a tourist venue last year, after a long battle with neighbors worried about loads of tour buses invading the neighborhood on a regular basis. Newton and his wife and daughter will live in a smaller home on the property, leaving the main home for the tourists.
ÂÂ
Newton would like the destination to be both a showcase for his collections, as well as a tribute to the Las Vegas performers of the past. It is expected that over 400 employees will benefit from the Casa de Shenandoah tourist attraction, at a time when Nevada's unemployment is one of the highest in the nation.
ÂÂ
Wayne Newton performed over 30,000 shows in Las Vegas over a 40-year period, earning him the nickname Mr. Las Vegas. His most popular hits include, "Daddy, Don't You Walk So Fast", "Red Roses for a Blue Lady" and "Danke Schoen".
