Top Rank promotions announces date for Pacquiao-Cotto title fight

Officials of Top Rank promotions announced last Monday that Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto will step on the ring on November 14th at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Even when the fight contracts have not been officially signed by the boxers, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said that he has agreements from his fighters to stage a WBO welterweight title bout at a catch weight of 145 pounds. Initially Pacquaio said he has not fighting Cotto after having a disagreement on the weight set for the fight. The Pac Man has only three of his 54 fights above the 130 pound, while Cotto normally fights on the 148-149 pounds. But after a few days negotiating, Cotto and Pacquiao finally agreed to fight on the 145 pounds weight.

Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 Ko’s) is considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, achieving important victories against Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De La Hoya, Marco Antonio Barrera and Ricky Hatton. Since March 2008, Pacquiao has successfully safeguarded his super-featherweight title and captured a lightweight belt and a junior-welterweight crown against Hatton.

On the other hand, Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs) defended the WBO belt it in June after scoring a split-decision victory over Joshua Clottey. Cotto's only loss happened on July 26th, 2008 in a match vs. Antonio Margarito, who was later suspended after being found with hardened inserts in his gloves before a bout.

Arum said that a promotional tour with the fighters will start September 9th in Los Angeles and will possibly makes stops in Puerto Rico, New York and Mexico.
