Star Trek: The Experience attraction would be revived in Downtown Las Vegas

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and Neonopolis developer Rohit Joshi say the Star Trek: The Experience attraction formerly at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel and Casino would be taken back to life and reinstalled in the downtown area. Mayor Oscar Goodman leaked the news this morning during a talk with reporters at City Hall. Shortly after that, Joshi confirmed what everybody was afraid of: the Trekkies will be back in Las Vegas.

"We are in very serious negotiations. We think it would be a fantastic addition to downtown" Joshi said.

Joshi also said that they are having conversations with CBS Consumer Products, the licensing division that owns the rights to the Star Trek name, costumes, rides and intellectual property used on Star Trek: The Experience. CBS Consumer Products had previously licensed all the material to Cedar Fair Entertainment Co to run the attraction at Las Vegas Hilton but that agreement finished when the Experience closed on September 1st, leaving CBS free to license the Star Trek rights.

If Joshi closes the deal, then he will be getting rights to operate an attraction that brought millions of visitors in Las Vegas for Star Trek rides, food, a museum and themed weddings. However, taking the attraction back to life won’t be an easy task; the developers will have to adapt the space to accommodate the rides, restaurant, museum, etc. But probably the most difficult part of reviving this attraction will be bringing back the audience, even some of the most dedicated fans said that by the end of its run at the Las Vegas Hilton, the attraction was out of time and even kind of tacky.

But regardless of what they do and how they will do it, Mayor Goodman is convinced that it has the potential to attract thousands of visitors to the downtown area. Since its debut, the $100 million entertainment complex has struggled to attract customers and tenants, and this would be a great chance to bring attractions that could revitalize the

Fremont St
area. Some other attractions at Neonopolis include shopping, dining, a 14-screen theater complex and a vintage neon signs exposition in a center courtyard. True to its name, Neonopolis boasts three miles of neon lights woven all over the building.

"It would be ironic. Perhaps the most successful place downtown could be Neonopolis, even though it has been an albatross around my neck all these years." Goodman said of the potential for landing Star Trek.
