Should Ipods be allowed during Live Poker Play?
- 2-13-2008
Many of the world's top pro's use Apple Ipods
during live multi-table-tournaments. Often visible at major tournaments
such as the World Series of Poker, World Poker Tour, etc; these small devices are common. This has
become a heated debate among the poker community for the past couple of years
now. Some players enjoy listening to there music, and others believe its just a
waste of time. When I play live, whether it’s with my friends or at a local casino, I do not wear head phones. If I tried to do so, (for whatever reason) I would probably lose focus and thus lose more money. Furthermore, at home games all players are not allowed to wear headphones. We feel it’s appropriate to have a great time interacting and not being anti-social. Now if the stakes were higher, then I’m sure one could pose an argument to use the devices at our home game to develop "a personal" advantage.ÂÂ
Now, doing the best I can I will try and break it down: the pros and cons of the Ipods on the felt.
PROS:
- Many believe listening to music will relax them, thus making them play better
- Having music play in your ears will allow you to focus on your game and not on others...
- Can make you ignore irritant and noisy opponents. (Such as Mike Matusow)
- If quiet, others will not get much info about that player because he/she is engrossed on there music and cards.
- Every one has the right to use Ipods, a free country means free Ipods usage.
CONS:
- Ipods and music slow the game up.
- Players will have to ask questions about what is going on.
- Lack of concentration
- It will annoy other players, having the Ipods sitting on the table next to your chips, etc.
- The game is vintage and should remain the same as the old days.
- You will miss action and not detect valuable information at crucial moments.
These are two lists that provide arguments for both sides listen up and chose your side wisely.
