Sevens Rugby Tournament moves to Las Vegas

USA Sevens LLC, owner of the USA Sevens Rugby Tournament has announced that its annual Seven Rugby Cup will move from PetcoPark in San Diego, California to the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas starting on 2010. According to tournament director Dan Lyle, the new relationship will be a multi-year commitment. The event was held in PetcoPark the last three years, decided to move due a better business deal. The event’s organizers said they had been approached by several other cities interested in holding the event, however, Las Vegas presented the best conditions to and infrastructure.

The 2010 USA Sevens event will take place on February 13th and 14th and will feature 16 international rugby sevens teams including New Zealand, England, Argentina, Australia and Fiji, U.S.A and Series champions South Africa. The tournament is the fourth round in the 2009/2010 IRB Sevens World Series and teams will compete in 44 matches held over the weekend. Besides bringing thousands of fans and tourists to Sin City during one of the slowest months of the year, the event will also be recorded for international distribution.

The 2009 Sevens tournament drew about 35,000 fans to PetcoPark over two days in mid-February, down slightly from the 36,000 visitors attending the event in 2008. The first year the tournament reported total attendance of nearly 30,000 people.
