Previously I touched on the issue of gambling debts at land based casinos. I used the state of Nevada as an example due to the abundance of casinos and history of gaming law. However Nevada is not the only state with casinos and certainly not the only state where gambling debt is accrued. In fact some of the best gambling can be found on riverboats where states have prohibited land based casinos.

There are six states with riverboat gaming and most of them are located in the Midwest. If you incur a gambling debt in a casino on water, is there any difference from a debt incurred at a land based casino, for example the Las Vegas Casinos?

Well the answer depends on what state you are gambling in. You can also look up any legislation or statutes regarding riverboat gambling through the relevant state website.

Mississippi – Casinos are allowed to accept credit instruments even if they are incomplete or postdated. The enforcement of gambling debt is prohibited by the state version of the Statute of Anne.

 

Missouri – In Missouri the maximum bet in a riverboat casino is $500 and enforcement of gambling debt is prohibited. Riverboat casinos may not extend credit to a gambler.

Iowa – Riverboat casinos have an exemption to enforce gaming debts.

 

Indiana – Riverboats may extend credit, but gaming debts are void and a gambler has 180 days to recover losses.

Illinois – While Illinois has generally refused to enforce gambling debts as a matter of public policy, the state legislature has allowed enforcement of a licensed riverboat gambling debt.

 

Louisiana – Louisiana has a bit strange. The legislature has prohibited enforcement of gambling debts with a statute but Louisiana courts will allow casinos to recover gambling markers.
