Ring Game Specialists

Having played every variety of Texas Hold’em ring game possible I’ve come to realize that that there are specialists. Certain players only play limit, others stick to no-limit. But more than this generalization within the type of Hold’em there are specialists. Unless you feel confident in your game you should avoid getting locked up in a pot with someone who plays that level or game type well.

When it comes to heads-up play, there are relatively few people who play heads-up and make money. There are generally a limited number of heads-up cash game tables at each level. Players who crush heads-up games will often sit on multiple poker tables. If you want to play heads-up you may be forced to sit on their table as it may be the only one open. Players who like to play heads-up will avoid playing strong poker players. They realize there is little money to be gained by playing someone of equal or greater skill.

Some people play both pot limit and no-limit equally well, but there are different strategies and different ways to control the pot in both of these games. If you play no-limit well, do not make the mistake of believing you will play pot limit well. The same can be said for limit Hold’em. While the only thing that really changes is the betting, people specialize in these games to take advantage.

The last thing I want to mention is the difference in players who play at full ring tables versus players who play six max games. Players who sit at six max games are often more aggressive. Their style of play lends itself very well to short handed games because there will be a lot more aggression, the hand range is more open, and there will be more hands played per hour. People who prefer six max do not always do as well in a full ring game. Full ring games allow players to be more patient and play a tighter range of hands. If you generally play full ring then jump into a six max game, be aware that you will be playing against very aggressive players who are comfortable playing short handed.
