Restoring poker class/manners to Online Poker
- 5-21-2008
Online poker is an activity of leisure, recreation, competition, and gambling. However, online poker is being ruined by the lack of class and poker edict of many different players. I’m going to address this issue and what everyone can do to clean up this dirty act.
Why is it that you have to listen to a bad sport throwing numerous curse words your direction when you catch a lucky card? Why is it you have to a listen to a person put you down and call you names when you make a stupid play and get knocked out of a tournament? There are many things going on in the poker room that is responsible for destroying a friendly poker tournament.
A lucky knockout - When you knock out a player by catching a flush on the river, hitting quads, etc, you are often subject to many words to insult your poker game. You got lucky and it its part of poker, but they seem not to care.
Big stack = Big talk - the chip leaders and big stacks in tournaments are having a tendency to put down the weaker players at the table. Just because they have caught lucky cards or played well, they believe they have the right to talk.
Prejudice - a player may have the name “go Yankees†and it will cause smack talk from a Boston Red Sox fan throughout the whole tournament. This is often annoying to players looking to have a good time and nice chat with fellow players.
The best things we can do in the poker room to help restore edict and class to the online game.
Wish your fellow good luck. Wishing your fellow players good luck at the beginning of the tournament will set the tone from what will hope to be a friendly table.
Show some class while playing. We all know bad beats is a part of poker. So if someone catches a card against you, tell them it was a nice hand. You will catch your share of lucky cards and you don’t someone yelling at you when you do.
Say thank you to a fellow player who tells you that you had a nice hand, it was a nice gesture of him to thank you.
Never say what you had when the hand while a hand is still going. That is online poker 101, and it just makes everyone mad.
If we all do our part then we can restore class and edict to the online game. I know everyone is getting sick of the cursing and lack of manners being shown while playing poker online.

We need a lot more reminders of how we should conduct ourselves during play . I also believe that some of the pros could use a lesson in manners themselves . A little less bad conduct by the likes of Matasow, Helmuth and others might make some of the people we play against realize that some of us are just in it to enjoy the game.
