Product Review: Hold'em Manager
- 3-10-2010
The online poker industry is becoming an increasingly crowded market. Not just for the poker rooms, but the software makers that track and compile hands in databases for their users. One of the preeminent programs available is Hold’em Manager (HEM). Using poker software can be a bit daunting at first, but I urge you to read on because HEM is an essential and valuable tool for any online poker player.
HEM comes with a built-in trial version. For up to 15 days you can use, view, and poke around with no commitment to buy. To properly use HEM you must set your poker client to save hand histories. HEM has multiple capabilities upon loading your hands. You can view your hands from tournaments and cash games. The default options are neatly sorted so that you’re able to quickly jump and view what you want. Looking to sort your results against certain players? HEM has you covered. HEM also has the capability to capture hands from tables you are merely observing and not playing at. This is a critical feature for anyone who plays a high volume of hands at the same stakes.
Hold’em Manager also comes with a HUD. A HUD is a heads-up display. Certain online poker rooms like Cake do not allow HUDs so make sure you check the terms and conditions for each room you play on. On the HUD itself you can customize it to display certain statistics you consider important, such as pre-flop raising or continuation betting. Whether you are playing one table or twenty, using your HUD you can use player stats to determine what the proper counter strategy may be. The HUD layout itself is simple and easy to use. A variety of statistics can be chosen and if you are unsure what they mean, the HEM FAQ section contains everything you need to know to get HEM running smoothly. Using the HUD itself does not lag the database or the poker client. It seamlessly integrated over the table and moving around the displays was made easy by simple drag an drop.
In addition to the hand history database and HUD, HEM also contains different apps. There are currently four different apps you can buy. The apps are priced differently and for you small stakes players, the cost of purchase is lower. Unfortunately I did not have a chance to use any of them, but those come with a 15 day trial period if you want to check them out.
Full Tilt Poker recently unleashed Rush Poker on the world and HEM has already adapted its software. For those of you who haven notes from Rush Poker players, you can use HEM to export your notes.
Overall HEM is a very easy to use program and deserves some serious attention if you’re looking to buy a poker program to help improve your game. Learning how to use the statistics and information you have is key to any poker game, and HEM is no different. Anyone who spends about 30-60 minutes with HEM will be able to figure out the basics of the program features. As is the case with most things in life, the more time and effort you devote to it, the more you will get out of it. HEM has different price points for different players. Their small stakes price is $54.99, the pro version which covers all stakes is $89.99 and for you Omaha players their combination price for both HEM and Omaha Manager is $149.99. Based on the ease of use and overall value, it should be clear why HEM is a must have for any online poker player.
