PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour crowns LAPT Puerto Vallarta champion

After an unexpected postponement by the Mexican gaming authorities in December, 2008, the PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour finally crowned its LAPT Puerto Vallarta champion. Following the event’s cancellation, PokerStars extended an invitation to the remaining LAPT Mexico main event players to take part in a special online freeroll tournament at PokerStars.net. Players started with the same number of chips they had when the original tournament was suspended and battled to define the final nine players. These players traveled to the beautiful Mantra Resort & Casino in Punta Del Este, in where the final table resumed on March 17th.
Even when the original prize pool was already distributed among the 242 players who signed up for the Main Event, PokerStars.com added $50,000 in prize money, alongside the prestigious LAPT title, to give players an extra incentive. The winner, 26 year old online qualifier Rory Cox from Lexington, Virginia, outlasted a final table that included team Poker Stars pro Victor Ramdin and Alex Brenes, brother of Team PokerStars Pro Humberto Brenes. The final table will be televised as part of the LAPT Season Two shows on ESPN later this year.
PokerStars have also announced that they will be running a second online freeroll for all players who attended LAPT Nuevo Vallarta last December. The freeroll will take place from April 4th to 5th, players will have until April 2th at 0:00 am to register for this event. Any player who travelled to Puerto Vallarta to take part in any of the events, including the main event, second chance tournament or any of the side events will be eligible to play one of the freerolls. The top ten players will receive a special PokerStars full package to the LAPT Mar del Plata, in Argentina, to play in the $500,000 Main Event.
"We know that many of our players travelled to Mexico to play the full schedule of events, not just the main event. As these events were also cancelled we want to offer any players who attended LAPT Nuevo Vallarta a chance to qualify for what will be our biggest and most exciting LAPT yet." said Sarne Lightman, Director of Marketing for PokerStars Latin America.
