Poker Players and their Assistant
- 3-31-2008
Professional poker players who are making enough
money to be professionals have to work hard at their game to constantly improve
it. There is a lot of play, study, and analysis that must be done to remain
successful. Some players are skilled enough that they are sponsored by online poker
rooms. Once a certain level of marketability is reached, some players are even
lucky enough to branch out and do other endorsements or have roles in
As a poker players assistant you may be called upon to do anything. Whether it is picking up dry cleaning, getting take-out food, or even watching for certain online poker players who sit, a job description for a poker player’s assistant can vary widely. The money may not be the greatest, but often times an hourly wage is offered that is very attractive for a young person who has a keen interest in poker.
If you are interested in becoming an assistant to a poker player the best way to get a job is to keep a close eye on player blogs. Often a pro will announce when a position opens up by posting about it online. Another good way to find a job as an assistant is to be around the industry. If you live around an area where a lot of pro tournament or cash game players live it does not hurt to introduce yourself and keep your ears open.
Of course this begs the question, does a poker player really need an assistant? The top pros may win or lose hundreds of thousands of dollars a day. Time is money. If they have to spend an hour taking their pet to the veterinarian or go grocery shopping and sit in traffic, the opportunity cost of that hour could be thousands of dollars. Poker players do not always have set hours, the time they play is dictated based on if a game is running and bankroll. Having an assistant can be helpful for a successful pro and it can be a good job for someone who does not mind getting paid to handle the mundane tasks of their life.
