Playing the "Right" hand
- 2-11-2008
There are many different combinations in Texas Hold’em and there are also many different situations in which your play and strategy depends on things like your chip stack or your position. The best hands people like to play are usually pocket pairs 8 or higher, A-K, and even A-Q or A-J. Some hands are great starters, but there are also so many hands that can get you into a lot of trouble or put you in a bad situation, no matter if your playing at an online poker site or in a live game.ÂÂ
The hand I most recently lost with was 8-9 suited. I had 8-9 on the button and I called and the small blind and the only other person in the hand was the Big Blind and he has just called. The flop had came 8-9-Q. I had checked my two pair, the Big Blind bet $210 and I went all in for $1050 I had. He called and picked up a big blind special of J-8. Just for fun he had also hit the full house with another jack on the river. It is just things like that where you only want to play the premium hands. A lot of hands like this are K-10, J-10, J-Q, and small pairs, and even A-J can get you into trouble depending on the situation. It is hard to read people and their hands when the flop comes J-K-5 and you are holding J-10 for example. You can almost never figure out how good your chances are and how to continue playing the hand unless you’re really talented reading the other poker players.ÂÂ
My advice: Try to stay away
from these hands unless you are already playing the blinds.
