You are playing in a NL poker tournament and are in mid position with the blinds at 100-200.  Your stack is at 10000.  You look down at your hand to see 8-9.  What do you do?  Playing suited connectors is something that can be very rewarding if done right, but potentially costly if they are done wrong.  In order to properly assess the situation you are in post flop with a hand like this, you must be a player who is advanced in reading hands and confident at the poker table. 

In this particular situation I recommend raising, just calling here may not be the best decision because this usually becomes a multi way pot.  It is even harder to read hand strength with multiple people in the pot.  So you make the standard raise and get two callers.  The flop comes 3-7-8.  What do you do now?  Betting or check raising are both good options.  However, check folding is really not as dumb as you might think.  With two people in the pot there is a decent chance that top pair is no good.  Still though, I recommend leading out.  You do and someone raises you.  Now what?  This is why playing suited connectors is very dangerous.  You are now playing a monster pot with 8-9.  It would be extremely hard here to read your opponent as weak and play back.  My strategy at that point would actually be folding the hand here. 

Of course, this isn't always what happens when you play suited connectors.  Occasionally you will blank completely and will easily get off you hand.  Also occasionally, you will flop the monster.  This is when you really get rewarded as your hand is hidden.  Try to play small pots with minimum risk and maximum reward.  Another big mistake I see is when people limp with these hands with about 10-15 trips left in regard to the blinds.  This is the wrong thing to do.  At this stage suited connectors and small pocket pairs become worthless.  When you get down to less than 10 trips they become playable again as you should be pushing all in with these hands.  Hopefully this has been helpful to some poker players.  My game may not be great but usually, of course this is my opinion, I feel I play suited connectors very well.  Just being modest.
