Playing Omaha

Some try to simplify it by saying it is the same as hold me except you receive four cards instead of two. However, there are many different aspects and strategies that are different. I am going to inform you on everything I know on how to be successful at Omaha. I typically play Omaha High Pot Limit, seeing as it is the most popular. So here are my top 3 tips for playing effectively.

1) Focus - You must remain focused on every hand while playing Omaha poker, a lot of people get caught thinking they have the pot won when they really aren't paying attention to the board. For example, you have Js-2h -Ad and 7c. The flop comes 2d-2s and 10s.You have trips with the ace kicker and believe you will have the best hand. You bet big and are called by one other player. Turn is 9h and you bet big and are called. You still believe you can’t lose and are betting on adrenaline of your big hand. River is a Qs. You have paid no attention the board and bet big and are called and see the opponent caught the spade flush on the river. You also did not realize there was a straight draw on the board, and your lack of focus have caught you a significant if not all of your chips.

2) Avoid No Limit Omaha- If you’re trying to build a big online bankroll. If you have one donkey move, any lack of focus, or a terrible beat you could find yourself down a significant amount of money. However, if you’re playing for fun or little money, it is a good way to improve your Omaha game. The reason being is that you have to pay for your mistakes and hopefully as you go on you will make less of them.

3) Omaha H/L - is very interesting and conservative. You are unlikely to lose a mass amount of money in this game...You usually know if you are going to win the high or low pot. This game will test your patience and focus to see if you could buy your time for you to hit your big hand. If you lack patience and like quick games, Omaha High/Low probably isn't for you, but fun if you are patience. I would play these in play money for a while on Full Tilt or any other online poker room until you believe you have a solid understanding of the game.

I often find Omaha to be more fun than Texas Hold’em and a good change of pace due to the extra cards. I also have found if you have a solid focus you usually have a pretty good idea on whether or not you will win the hand. Playing Omaha well and intelligence should allow you to win more than you lose.

Note: There are a lot of donkeys that play Omaha in low stakes that you need to be aware of. If you encounter them, playing smart is the key to taking their money.
