Play limit Hold’em to build your bankroll
- 6-4-2008
Recently I
cashed out 1000 points from WDIAV, for the $40 poker cash. The last time I
cashed out it didn't go to well, so I asked myself why. The answer really was simple;
I was playing too loose and calling big bets with draws. I would also call tons
of hands pre flop, even with big bets. I told myself that I was going to play
tight this time, and just wait it out until I get a big hand. Well, I really
don't have that much patience, and then it hit me. I was at the FullTilt.com
lobby and at the top right corner of the screen I saw "Its limit happy
hour!" First off, for those of you who don't know, basically when you sit
down at a table at a certain hour, you will earn 2x the Full
Tilt points. Well this was just perfect for me, as about 2 weeks ago I made
my first deposit, and in order to get the match bonus, you need to unlock Full
Tilt Poker points. Now, here is why I love Hold’em, and why you should give
it a chance before you say you don't like it.
Now, I totally agree that when playing in a tournament with a double stack,
(usually 3000 chips), it can get boring if blinds are $10/20. So let me re word
it, you should play, limit cash games. So here is what I did; I buy in
for $5, at a $0.50/1 table with 9 people so I don't get blinded to death. The
big blind is 50 cents, so I can see about 10 hands. But here is the great thing
about limit; you can always see the flop for cheap. That is why I love it, I
often find myself calling min raises with K-Q or A rag suited, and in Hold’em,
these are fairly good cards. I'll call any suited connectors, as if the flop
comes 2 hearts and I hold 2 hearts, it is cheap also to see the turn. So of
course people say that limit is bad because you can't bet people out of there
draws. Well that is true; however it is almost the same in NL. I mean, myself,
I have put people all in with an inside straight draw, and they have called.
This brings me to my next point; there aren't as many donks in Hold’em. Donks
want to hit it big by doubling, tripling up, and when they see limit Hold’em
they figure they wont be able too. Now it brings me to my last point, how often
have you thought you had the best hand, pushed all in, only to find the other
guy has you beaten. That can take a devastating blow to your stack, and here is
the great thing about limit. You can never lose a lot. Even if you do keep
potting it back and forth, you will still have saved a lot more money, than if
you were playing no limit. People tend to think that you can't win a lot
playing limit, well you may not be able to win as much as playing no limit, but
you for sure do not lose as much. I buy in for $5, and leave when I am at $15,
and have done that with my $40 and it is now just over $100, and still growing.
So overall, you should play limit Texas Hold’em for these 3 reasons:
- If you are fairly loose it is great because it allows you to see many flops, draws, etc, for cheap
- There are not as many donks in limit, because most donks just want to triple up, and don't think they will be able to in limit.
- Playing limit will save you a lot of money, if you run into a big hand.
