Phil Ivey makes his move at the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event

So far in the 2009 World Series of Poker we have seen numerous professional players take home bracelets. A few have even managed to take down two coveted gold bracelets. One of these professionals is poker superstar Phil Ivey of Team Full Tilt. He has already bagged two bracelets in event 8 (2-7 Draw Lowball No Limit) and 25 (Omaha/Seven Card Stud HL/8 or Better). There has been a debate amongst players and the online poker community over whether or not a professional can win the main event now with enormous playing fields. Phil Ivey is doing his best to put that debate to rest with his amazing run.

Currently out of 6,494 entrants Phil Ivey is one of 29 players left in the field. There are a few pros left but one of the reasons why Ivey is so dangerous is that he has chips. At the dinner break on Day 7 he currently sits in 2nd and is only 3 million chips behind the current leader. With his deep stack he can freely use aggression to move players off their hands or he can choose to let off the throttle and let players at other tables eliminate themselves.

Ivey is only 33 and has the mental and physical stamina to play long hours. For many amateurs playing poker for hours on end can take a toll. The Main Event is entering its 7th day of play and while breaks are interspersed, to play at a consistently high level places an enormous strain on a player. The emotion, stress, and logical thinking required can take a drain on anyone but if there’s any professional well equipped to handle this adversity it is Ivey. As a regular at the famed cash game in Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio Ivey regular plays $4,000/$8,000 limit games and when playing online he plays the highest limits available on Full Tilt Poker often playing multiple tables at the same time.

Another crucial factor is his experience. He has played a wide range of poker games including limit and no limit. From cash to tournaments he has consistently won since he first started to play and has bracelets and trophies as a testament to his skill.

While Ivey is in great position to make the November Nine for this year, one thing he can’t control is lady luck. There is plenty of poker left and no one knows what is to come over the next levels of play. However I wouldn’t want to bet against Phil Ivey, would you?
