NHL considering moving the annual awards ceremony to Las Vegas

The National Hockey League is considering the idea of moving its annual awards ceremony from Toronto to Las Vegas. A league representative told the media that the NHL is currently working in the creation of another signature event for the league, and that moving the annual award show to Las Vegas should be more appealing to sponsors, team officials and players in general.

The NHL representatives have been in contact with the Palms Resort and Casino to discuss the possibility of hosting the awards gala and to set a date for the ceremony (which is believed to take place shortly after the Stanley Cup finals). According to the league’s executives, this move clearly indicates that the NHL is ready to make the move official. The award show is usually scheduled between the end of the NHL playoffs and the entry draft, but it's believed the league is planning to set the event after the draft to make it more attractive for sponsors and the media. The 2009 draft is set to take place in Montreal from June 25th to 27th, and according to the NHL's official event program, the date for awards show appears as "to be announced."

In the last year or so, several sports media sites and newspapers rumored that the NHL could be interested in setting a franchise in Las Vegas, but even when the plan has been discussed for months, the idea of adding more teams to the league is not plausible before 2012. However, moving the awards show to Las Vegas is maybe the first indication that the NHL is interested in the idea of setting a hockey team in SinCity or at list find out what draw the sport would have in a place like Vegas.
