Golden Boy Promotions representatives and boxing promoter Lou DiBella held a press conference in Las Vegas to announce the welterweight title unification fight between WBA Champ Shane Mosley and WBC titleholder Andre Berto. The Mosley vs. Berto fight will take place on January 30th at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
The 38 year old Mosley (46-5, 38 KO) won his first title in 2000 after beating undefeated Phillip Holiday in a IBF lightweight title fight. Since then, he met and defeated some of the best boxers in the world, including Oscar De La Hoya in 2000 and 2003, and Jose Luis Cruz and Fernando Vargas in 2006. In 2007, he defeated Luis Collazo to capture the WBC interim welterweight crown. Now Mosley will return to the ring after 11 months of inactivity after he regained the WBA Welterweight "Super" championship from Antonio Margarito on January 24th, 2009 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
"Andre Berto's a good, young fighter but he's bitten off more than he can chew with all the talk he's been doing. I've forgotten more about the fight game than he knows and the world will see that in January. I am so excited to get back in the ring again. We have the same style of boxing and he's very good. I'm very proud that he did take the fight. He's the only man to step up and take the fight. There's still some mistakes that he is making and that'll be a problem in our fight." Mosley said.
Haitian American Andre Berto (25-0, 19 KO) represented Haiti at the 2004 Summer Olympics and from December 2004 to October 2006, Berto won 15 fights, with 13 coming by way of knockout. On September 29, 2007, Berto defeated David Estrada by eleventh round technical knockout in Atlantic City, taking the NABF welterweight belt and his first career title. On June 21, 2008, Berto became the WBC welterweight champion by defeating Miguel Rodriguez by seventh round technical knockout.
"He's a future Hall of Famer, just came off a tremendous fight with Margarito. I'm the young buck of the crew. Since I'm the underdog, of course, I have something to prove. But I'm going to go in there and do what I gotta doâ€Âcommented Berto.
The bout will air live on HBO's World Championship Boxing from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, beginning at 10 pm ET / 7 pm PT. Tickets for Mosley vs. Berto are already on sale. For more information, please click here.
