Mir vs. Lesnar Rematch postponed from UFC 98

According to an announcement released by UFC officials, the rematch between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir for the heavyweight Ultimate Fighting Championship's title fight scheduled for the UFC 98 on May 23rd at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, has been suspended and replaced by a main-event light-heavyweight title match between champion Rashad Evans and the undefeated challenger Lyoto Machida.

The reason cited by the UFC for the suspension is an unexpected knee injury suffered by Mir during a training session not long ago. The UFC expressed that Mir had bone fragments in his knee that affected his mobility and that he required surgery to remove the fragments. However, the UFC also announced that the expected Mir-Lesnar fight will be rescheduled to serve as the main event during the UFC 100 set to take place in Las Vegas in July, 2009.

In addition, the UFC also informed that Rashid Evans' challenger for UFC 100, Irvine's Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, has suffered ligament injury in his jaw that will require also surgery and that will not be able to reclaim the belt he lost to Forrest Griffin last year and that he will now fight the winner of the match between Evans (18-0-1) and Machida (14-0).
