Mike Matusow: Team Full Tilt Poker Player Profile
- 11-26-2009
Both loved and disliked by many poker fans and fellow players, Mike Matusow, also known as “The Mouth†for his trash talking, has shown everyone that despite his bad temper and sometimes coarse manners at the tables, he is a more than worthy opponent to have.
Born in L.A in 1968, Mike began playing poker after working as a dealer at The Orleans and Sam’s Town Casino in the early 1990s, where he spent hours studying and watching players from the other side of the table.
After several years, Mike decided to quit his job to dedicate more time to his poker career. Matusow's first professional achievement came in 1999, when he won his first World Series of Poker bracelet at the $3.5K No-Limit Hold ´em event, pocketing more than $266K. In 2002, he won his second WSOP bracelet and almost $150.000 in the $5K Omaha Hi/Lo Split event. In 2005, Mike became the first player to win two $1 million prizes over the same year, finishing in 9th place at the WSOP Main Event, and winning the WSOP Tournament of Champions.
In 2006, Mike finished in 2nd place at the FullTiltPoker.Net Pro Showdown, winning $200K. Only three dyas later, Matusow finished 3rd in the No-Limit Hold 'em event at the Tournament of Champions, cashing an additional $250K. That same year, Mike made it to the final table in the WSOP $2.5K No-Limit Hold 'em event, finishing 7th and adding another $90K to his tournaments winnings.
In 2007 WSOP, Mike had three top-20 finishes, totaling over $120K in prize money. He then took 2nd in the Bellagio Cup III WPT No-Limit Hold 'em Main Event, winning more than $670K. In 2008, he placed 9th at the National Heads-Up Championship for $26K, and won his third bracelet and more than $530K in the $5K No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball event.
Mike Matusow is also one of the original members of the prominent Team Full Tilt and a frequent collaborator for the site. Matusow also authored a book titled “Check-Raising the Devil†and released in May 2009.
