Metagame Theory
- 5-8-2008
Previously I wrote about game theory. Some professional players have studied it extensively and apply it while playing poker. Game theory at its heart is an academic theory applied across multiple fields. Lately a number of younger players, especially internet poker players, have been discussing something called Metagame Theory. So what is metagame theory and how is it applied to a game of poker?
Metagame was created by mathematicians in the 1960’s and later used by politicians. When it comes to games, it is a type of strategy which is used to transcend the game you’re playing. This sounds fancy but what does it mean? For the most part it simply means you use your knowledge of other factors to affect the game. An example of this in poker is best illustrated using basics. Once you are dealt cards you play the hand as you normally would, this is basic and considered basic thinking. If you think beyond your own cards this would be the transcendent thinking referenced in the theory. While it sounds impressive, it is actually quite simple. It can be taking notes on players, observing when others tilt, etc. A good example would be making a big bluff and showing it to make sure everyone at your table sees it. Later on in the game you remember the situation when you bluffed and try to make it look like you are bluffing once again even though you may have the best hand. The heart of metagame theory is that you are trying to induce others to act how you want based on your knowledge of them. Some people refer to this as the game within the game.
I am not purporting to be an expert
in metagame theory, but many online poker players seem to prefer it. In the future if
someone at your table professes to be a follower of metagame you will know what
it means. It could be something you want to keep in the back of your mind while
you play with them, knowing that they will be making plays based on every
factor involved in poker.
