Las Vegas Hotel and Casino on fire

Officials have reported a fire alarm that is affecting the Monte Carlo Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Guests were being evacuated to the Bellagio and New York, New York after flames and black smoke were reported coming out of the rooftop area of the west-facing side of the hotel.

Smoke and flames are visible from miles away. There are no reports of any casualties or injuries or what started the fire. The fire, which was reported around 11 a.m., and according to witnesses at the scene it was spreading from the center section of the hotel across the roof. Flaming embers fell to the street below.

Large crowds conglomerated to watch the fire, and traffic around the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino and on the Las Vegas Strip was gridlocked as streets were closed several blocks around the hotel. The 32-story casino-hotel modeled after the Place du Casino in Monte Carlo, Monaco, was a joint venture between Steve Wynn’s Mirage Resorts and Circus Circus Enterprises.

“The building is being evacuated,” said Gordon Absher, spokesman for the hotel owner, MGM Mirage Inc.
