Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz to hold Marquez-Diaz II rematch in Las Vegas
Mexican boxer and WBA and WBO Lightweight world champion, Juan Manuel Marquez has agreed to fight a rematch with former unified WBA & WBO and IBF world lightweight champion Juan Diaz on July 31st , at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Marquez vs. Diaz rematch is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Marquez Boxing Promotions. The event will be produced and distributed live on HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
"This fight is the perfect way for boxing fans to enjoy a hot summer night. Marquez and Diaz gave us one of the best fights I have ever seen and with even more at stake this time, I believe they're going to surpass what happened in their first fight, if that's even possible." said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions.
"A lot of people are asking me why Juan Diaz again? There are two reasons. Number one, he is a great fighter and deserves a rematch. Number two, the people deserve a great fight like this†said Marquez in a Press conference held to announce the match.
Marquez (50-5-1, 37 KOs) defeated Diaz (35-3, 17 Kos) via ninth round TKO in an amazing match held in February 2009 at the Toyota Center in Houston, TX. Marquez-Diaz II will mark Marquez' return to the boxing ring since his 2nd round loss vs Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 19th , 2009 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
"People are saying this is going to be a must win fight for me. I see this as redemption. Redemption for what I was going to accomplish in 2009, but it wasn't meant to be in 2009. Come July 31, I am going to pick up in the ninth round. I left off in the ninth round last time, and I am going to pick it up from there.†added Mexican American boxer Juan Diaz.
