Intimidation: a factor that will help you win at poker

Playing online poker is great, you can always find a game, you have the comfort of playing from your own home, and you don't have to worry about your body language as tells. However, nothing beats going to the casino and enjoying that feeling of the chips in your hands as you make a huge bet, flipping over your cards when you have the nuts, and in general the card room atmosphere. Some people go to the casino to have a good time, usually they go with their friends, play the slots, maybe the blackjack tables, and maybe figure they will give the poker tables a shot even though they never really play. Well, at the casino in my city that is very common on a Friday night, which is the only night I will go to the casino when I want to make easy money, and here is the reason why.

The people who are new to poker are my favorite people to play against. Sure there is the argument that you can't bet them out of pots or put them on certain hands as they are just beginners and do not know any better, and that is completely true. However, there are 2 huge things that you can do take your opponents chips, body language and intimidation.

Now beginners obviously don't know a whole lot on how body language, things such as posture, hand shakiness, etc, can reveal what kind of hand you are sitting on. So there are a few things I look for while playing in a pot against a beginner. If i am in a pot and my opponent seems excited and bets quickly and keeps looking at his poker chips, I can think that his hand will be fairly strong. Same goes if he is slouching the whole game, and all of a sudden has great posture and is on the edge of his seat, he has a hand. Another tricky tell is if the opponent's hand is shaking when he makes a bet, chances are he has a fairly strong hand and is very excited. So these again are all very basic tells, but to the beginner poker player they don't realize them.

The second factor is intimidation. When I go, I will dress to make it look like I mean business. For example, I will put on a hoody, pull the hood up, put on sunglasses, and not say a word at the table, and one thing I just recently started doing, bringing a note book. What I will do after each hand is write down in my notebook how the player played the hand, half the time I may just be doodling but they don't know that, so when they look at me and see me with a hoody, sunglasses and taking notes, they are going to be scared to face me. Give this a try next time you go the casino, you will get much more respect when you are in hands.

So the last question, how do you mark a beginner? Simple, those players who ask "What if I don’t want to put in my big blind" (much more common then you would think), and those players who make string bets or splash the pots, or you see them playing awful cards, you've got a beginner. So if you want to make some easy money, go to the casino, look intimidating and feed off of the beginners
