How to win at MTT's
- 2-28-2008
Multi table tournaments
(MTT) are a great way to make money and have fun too. But if your not careful
you can lose your bankroll quickly. So if you want to give MTT a shot,
obviously don’t buy in for your whole bankroll, give the 2.50's a try. MTT can be broken down into 3 stages: The Early stage, the Middle stage, and the Final Stage
The Early stage is often miss played by many people. The common misconception is: blinds are so small; I can call almost anything to see a flop. Well before you know it, you can lose a large amount of your stack calling hands your not supposed to. Really, tighten up ALOT, fold QJ, or worse. Reason being is this: let the donkeys knock themselves out first. This will save you lots of poker chips, more than you think. We have all seen the donk’s who go all in with ace rag, K-J off etc. Once they are out, you can begin to play poker the way it is supposed to be.
The Middle Stage is where you still play fairly tight, but loosen up at the same time. If you are last to act with one other person in the hand, QJ might be worthy of a raise. Now, if other players are good, they will have assumed you as being the rock kind of player, as seen in the Early Stage. This is a time to bluff, but do not show the bluffs. Show your good hands so they think you are good and then when you bluff, they will have respect. You will be able to steal more blinds this way which all adds up. You can gamble a little, in order to collect enough chips so you can have a dominant lead at the final table.
Final table is one most people are not used to, but you can tell the beginners apart from the experienced. Assuming you have a dominant lead, make the short stacks move all in, use your power! If there are a few spots till the money, you will find players tightening up just to make it. This is the perfect opportunity to steal blinds, which are big at this point and will add up. Loosen up your style of play and play as you usually would. Really, the final table is up to you how you play it.
Now you may be asking yourself, well what does this guy know about MTT? Well I know when i started playing them, I was not great, and rarely finished ITM. I asked myself why, did some research, and then realized this was a great strategy. After a while, I started to do extremely well in them, starting off with a free roll of 2700 people in which I won 1st, a $3.00 buy in with 440 people in which I took first, and a $10 buy in with 820 people in which I took 3rd. I am not saying this to boast, but rather to tell you how well this poker strategy works.
