Almost two decades after their legendary welterweight championship match, former world champion Bernard Hopkins and current NABO and IBC light heavyweight champion Roy Jones will meet again in a long waited rematch set to take place on April 3rd at Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.
The 45-year-old Hopkins (50-5-1 32 KOs) has been looking for a rematch with Jones since their May 1993 in Washington, DC, when Jones defeated Hopkins by unanimous desicion for the vacant IBF middleweight crown.
Hopkins recovered from that loss to win the middleweight title which he held for 10 years. He lost his Ring light heavyweight title vs. Joe Calzhage in Las Vegas by split decision in April, 2008. More recently, he scored a split decision vs. Kelly Pavlik in October 2008. Two months ago, he defeated Enrique Ornelas by unanimous decision in a light heavyweight bout in Philadelphia.
"A rematch with Roy has been in the back of my mind for a long time and it's finally going to happen. I have accomplished a lot in my career since that night in Washington, DC in 1993, and I am going to end this thing between me and Roy once and for all." Hopkins said.
In recent years, the 41-year-old Jones (54-6, 40 Kos) achieved important victories against five-time world champion Felix Trinidad at Madison Square Garden in New York City in 2008, Omar Sheika on March 21, 2009 and Jeff Lacey in August 2009, before suffering a first-round loss against Danny Green in December, 2009.
"We're giving the fans what they want to see. They deserve this fight and why not supply the fans with what they demand?. Now I can finally terminate the Executioner once and for all. My new nickname for this fight will be - The Terminator." said Jones.
Tickets for The Rivals: Hopkins vs. Jones II at the Mandalay Bay Events Center will go on sale in the next days. The bout will be broadcast live on pay-per-view beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. The boxers will take part in a press tour with stops in New York and Los Angeles next Tuesday and Wednesday, February 9 and 10, respectively.
