Guy Laliberte, the brain behind Cirque Du Soleil

Cirque du SoleilGuy Laliberte is the billionaire creator of Cirque du Soleil, born in Canada in 1959; Laliberte dropped college and traveled to Europe as a musician and street art performer.  Upon returning to Canada he got a job at a power plant, but when a labor strike began, Guy got back into performing, this time as a stilt walker.  He then went on to produce and manage a fair that toured Quebec.  With a government grant Laliberte then produced "Le Grande Tour du Cirque Du Soleil."  After some success Guy took all his profits and brought his show to Los Angeles.  It was a risk the proved to be very lucrative.  His show was well received and it took off.  Now Laliberte is a 95% owner of Cirque.  There have been 20 different productions of Cirque du Soleil to this day.  His success has earned him many honors, one of which was to be on the list of the 2004 Times most 100 influential people in the world.

Last month I was fortunate enough to watch “Love” at The Mirage Hotel and Casino.  Love is a Cirque du Soleil show set to music by the Beatles, and what a show it was.  From the start to end it was non stop entertainment.  I wasn't sure what to expect before the show began.  I had seen a Cirque du Soleil show on TV once and it was strange but interesting.  I didn't know how it would be compatible with songs by the Beatles.  I was not disappointed.  It was dancing and crazy acrobatics.  Every song had a different performance.  There was a theme for every performance that went hand in hand with the song being played.  When "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" came on there were stringed lights hanging form the ceiling flickering on and off that appeared to be diamonds floating in the air.  A girl hung high above the stage from some kind of rope that she slipped her foot into the loop of.  She did an amazing performance without a harness or net below her.  The dancing and other acrobatics had so much energy I couldn't take my eyes off it.  It’s hard to explain what you will see if you go to this show, but I can guarantee you will be entertained.  The soundtrack is awesome too, with a great collection of Beatles songs.  I would recommend this show highly to anyone in Vegas looking to see a great show.

Laliberte also likes to play poker.  You may have seen him playing on TV.  He was at the Final table of the WPT World Championship in 2007.  The prize money was not was not what Laliberte was after, he coveted the prestigious title.  He made some great plays and fearless bluffs against some of the professionals.  He ended up finishing in fourth place for $696,220.  Guy also played on High Stakes Poker season 4 where he lost an $818,100 pot to David Benyamine.
