Galaxy Theaters shuts down Neonopolis movie theaters

Galaxy Theaters, owner and operator of movie theaters in more than 10 locations in the U.S has informed its decision to shut down its theaters located at the Neonopolis multiplex in Downtown Las Vegas right after Thursday's late shows. Galaxy managed the 11-screen theater in downtown's Fremont Street Experience since September 2006 when the company signed a deal to take over the movie theater complex opened by Crown Theatres on May, 2002.

According to Galaxy President Rafe Cohen, the company believes there’re enough film lovers in the city to sustain a movie theater in Downtown Las Vegas, however, Cohen says the company experienced a series of inconveniences and challenges that pushed it to take the decision to close its Downtown Las Vegas theaters, citing problems ranging from continuous difficulties with Neonopolis air conditioning system, to contractual inconveniences with the city to get a proper parking space, which required Galaxy to pick up their customers’ tab in order to make the movie theaters more appealing to visitors.

Galaxy officials say they are currently working on finding another location in Downtown Las Vegas, however, Cohen says they still considering that possibility and that nothing has been officially arranged yet. Galaxy Theaters also operates an all-digital multiplex at the Cannery in North Las Vegas and is currently developing a high definition movie theater complex at the M Resort and Casino, which is scheduled to open in 2010.
