Full Tilt Poker Pro Erik Cajelais wins 2009 WSOPE Event #2
- 9-24-2009
Twenty seven year old Canadian pro and member of Full Tilt Poker Pro, Erik Cajelais, has claimed his first WSOP bracelet after taking the World Series of Poker Europe Event 2, winning $169.000 in prize money.
The WSOPE £2,500 PL Hold'em/Omaha event #2 attracted 158 of the world's best players to the Empire Casino in London. Day one was played at a rapid pace, especially during the action-packed Pot-Limit Omaha rounds. However, that was not a problem fro Cajelais, who dominated the early action to finish the day as the overall chip leader.
Day two continued at the same speed, culminating with an early start to the final table. Cajelais entered the final table seventh in chips after making his way through the tough day two field. The stacked final table featured four former WSOP bracelet winners, including Team Full Tilt's Howard "The Professor" Lederer, along with Men Nguyen and Hoyt Corkins. Lederer was the first player to bust out from the final table, heading to the rail after his pocket 3s did not hold up against his opponent's A-K.
The tournament was put on hold for the night when five-handed play was reached. At that time Cajelais was the short stack and appeared headed for a fifth-place finish. This all changed when play resumed the next afternoon, as Cajelais won a series of big pots to reclaim the chip lead for the first time since day one.
Cajelais continued dominating the final hour of play, taking a huge lead over the rest of the players after eliminating Nguyen in fourth place. When heads-up play began, Cajelais has an almost 10-to-1 chip lead over Swedish poker pro Mats Gavatin.
A few hands after the start of the heads-up battle, Cajelais made a full house in a Pot-Limit Omaha hand, eliminating Gavatin and claiming his first WSOP bracelet. With this win, Cajelais's career winnings went up to $1.7 million. His best previous finish was second place in the US$5K Pot-Limit Omaha event at the 2007 WSOP.
"I felt like I really, really, really wanted to win. I had to do everything I could to win, and today I played well and the cards came out my way." But he played down his physical fitness by noting; "I think once you reach 50, 60 or 70, then maybe fitness is a factor. But if you are young and in decent shape, it should not be hard to play for long periods." said Cajelais.
