Following in Ferguson's foot steps.

So as most of us are aware, Chris Ferguson has come up with the objective to turn $0 into a $10,000 playing online poker. Now I saw this and was quite intrigued by the idea, so I figured I too would give it a shot. Chris had laid out some pretty strict rules about his bankroll management, something that takes a whole lot of patience and self discipline. Now my bankroll management skills are no where near as good as Ferguson's, so here is my general rule outline:
  1. Turn $0 into $1000 in one month
  2. If I play in re buys, I can not re buy or add on
  3. If I buy in at a cash game, I leave when I am up double, or down half. Example, I buy in for $2.50, and would leave either at $5 or $1.25
  4. The highest buy ins for poker tournaments and sit and go's will be $10.
So this is just a general outline, and by following these rules I am already 1/4 of the way there. Here is how it went down. So I couldn’t wait a whole month for the WDIAV $1200 freeroll, so I did the unimaginable, and played in a $25 freeroll. After outlasting 430 players, I placed 3rd for $2.88. Now almost anything I play in while be near my entire bankroll, so I decided to go for it, and bought in at a $0.25/.50. I had got deal A-K suited my 3rd hand, and turned the nut flush. With 2 other people in the hand potting it, I tripled up to $7.50, and then sat out.

Now I know, hit and running is poor poker etiquette, but these are the rules I had set for myself and had to follow them. I figured I was doing well, so I bought in for another $2.50, and did this about 6 times, each leaving with $5. So I was just around $30, and I decided to give the $3.30 re buy a shot. I did not re buy or add on, and placed in the 50's for about $26. I then played in a $5.50 18 person sng, and did poor in that.

So I took a step back and analyzed, how have I won the majority of my money so far? The answer was cash games and tournaments. I bought in for $5 again at a $.50/1 limit Texas Hold’em (which is crucial in my opinion to maintaining and building a bankroll) and left when I was at $10. I did this over and over, and before I knew it I was just over $100. I realized this:

Sng's were not great for me as I was not that strong at them, so I decided not to play them anymore. Tournaments are great if you finish final table or better, but only make a small profit if you just finish in the money.

Cash games are my strong part of my game, so I decided to spend 75% of my bankroll on cash games, and 25% of my bankroll on poker tournaments. I eventually kept building up from buying in with $5 and leaving when at $10, and currently am sitting at just over $200. So from $0 to $200 is a pretty good start, and I encourage you to give it a shot! Set your own guide lines based on your strong points of your game, and before you know it you will be on your way!
