Find a player

So there are numerous advantages of playing online poker rather than live poker, for reasons such as:

- Your body language is not a tell since the people sitting at your table can’t see you.
- You can find a good game or tournament any time, morning, afternoon or evening
- You have the comfort of playing from your own home

Now these are the 3 most obvious advantages of playing online poker, but here is another one that I recently came upon not too long ago, "Find a player". Now most people use this to find out if their friends or other people such as pros are playing, and almost every site offers this option, usually under the request tab at Full Tilt or PokerStars, and then Find a Player. Now how can finding a pro or your friend and see what table they are playing at be an advantage to your poker game? Well it's not, but here is where you can use it to help your game. Let’s say you’re playing a single cash game, $0.25/ 50 at a 9 person table. What I will do once I sit down at the table, is take one players name at my table, go to the Find a Player option, and enter their name, write down how many tables they are playing at and what stakes, and repeat this until I have done it to every player at my table. Still asking how this can help your game?

Easy, let’s start off by an example, using 2 people $0.25/0.50 table. Let's say we use Player A, we go ahead and look up his name in Find a Player, and we come across on 5 tables. Our own $0.25/0.50 along with two $1/2 tables and one $3/6 table. So what we can gather from player A is that of course, he is multi tabling. This means that he wont have time to get good reads on the people at his table, and wont have the time to make well thought out bluffs. So when we are involved in a pot with Player A, we can gather that he won’t know much about how we play, and will most likely be playing the cards, and it will be easier to pull bluffs on him. Also you will note that Player A is playing much higher stakes, and we are on his lowest stake table, $0.25/50. This means that he will be playing fairly loose, much looser than the $3/6 for sure. We can put him on hands such as lots of draws and weaker hands, as if he loses, its just at a $0.25/50 table. So to conclude Player A, he is multi tabling, and we are at his lowest stake table, which means that he will be playing fairly loose, with lots of drawing hands, and since he is playing at much higher stakes he most likely will not be paying close attention to our table.

Now let’s take Player B for a much shorter example. We go to the Find a Player request, type in his name, and all we see under his name is the $0.25/50 table we are at. So what we can gather from player B is that he will be most likely paying close attention to the table, and be focusing a great deal on how people play their hands etc. The example for Player B is much shorter than Player A, but it is simple, watch out for him as he is most likely making notes on the players and watching every move you make.

So again, poker is not just about playing the cards, but about playing your opponents, and a great way to get an advantage on them and be one step ahead is to find out how many tables they are playing and gathering information on them based on that. Just one of the many advantages to playing online.
