European Casinos Demand Compensation

  • 10-26-2007

Several weeks after the Island of Antigua won its World Trade Organization court cases against the United States, the news about a tremendous compensation have turn around the world. At the beginning, the Antigua’s representatives made a demand of $4.3 billion that was not taken seriously by the U.S, who reacted claiming that the amount is insane a lacks of any substantial basis. Whether if they get what they ask for or not is about to be seen, what is tremendously important is the precedent this case could provide for future demands.

Following this the Antigua’s example, the European Union has been urged by the gaming and gambling companies that it represents to ask for a tremendous $100 billion in compensation from United States.  This amount would be based on a portion of the proceeds that these nations have been excluded from due to the passage of new legislation in the U.S that specifically prohibits the successful implementation of sites based in these areas.  While the United States and other nations continue to operate with impunity and autonomy in the European Union and other areas, the reverse cannot be said to be true, as the United States has legislated foreign competition out of existence in the online poker rooms and casinos. Until such time as the United States repeals its snarled mess of gaming and gambling laws, there is likely to be a minimal chance for foreign entrepreneurs to profit from the local domestic market.

With this new demand from the European Union, the possible result for the United States cannot be good at all, they will probably have to compensate them for monies that potentially could have been earned through the business conducted on the Web by online poker rooms and casinos sponsored from the European Union, it has become extremely clear that the United States-based online poker rooms and casinos are not the only establishments that are displeased with recent rulings by the United States lawmakers and legislators in general.  With the extremely restrictive laws and regulations that are handed down from Washington on a regular basis, more and more gaming and gambling enthusiasts around the world are less and less enthused about the multitude of restrictive laws that keep them from profiting from the Internet in any meaningful way.  Considering the amount of effort and liquid capital that has been expended in building up the Web presence of many of these European union-based online poker rooms, sportsbooks and casinos, it is easy to believe that there is a tremendous amount of income that has been squandered by this new legislation and enforcement of a newly interpreted law.
