EPT robbery suspect turns himself in to police
- 3-18-2010
Less than a day after the arrest of a man in relation to the European Poker Tour robbery in Berlin, a 21-year-old German man has turned himself in and admitted taking part in the heist early this month, authorities said Wednesday.
After intensive questioning, the man named his accomplices, and offered to return his share of the €242,000 ($465,000) loot, the German police said. The vehicle used in the heist, a black Mercedes used by the criminals to run away from the scene, has also been recovered by the Police, however, the money hasn’t been recovered yet. The names and photos of the other three suspects, a19-year-old German, a 20-year-old Turkish and another 20-year-old of unknown nationality, had been released by the German Police.
On March 6th, several armed burglars broke into the Grand Hyatt Casino in Berlin wielding machetes and handguns, snatched bags of cash, struggled with security guards, and took just over €242,000.. No injuries were reported, and most of the prize money was kept in a safe box away from the public.
The tournament, the German leg of the EPT, attracted around 950 players including German tennis legend and PokerStars.com sponsored celebrity Boris Becker. The tournament resumed after a four-hour delay, with the €1.000.000 top prize eventually won by American online poker pro Kevin "ImaLuckSac" MacPhee.
