Don't Play Reckless Poker
- 2-11-2010
Most poker players dream of winning a big pot with a pair of aces. After all, before the flop you have every hand at the table beat. Being dealt a big pair can lead to a feeling of excitement and anticipation as you look to take money off other players. It can be easy to get wrapped up in your own hand and not consider the types of hand ranges your opponents will play in and out of position. Prior to the flop hitting the board it is tempting to think to yourself that you are going to play your hand no matter what.
Getting married to your hand can be incredibly costly. Poker is a game of information. If you choose to ignore the information you have it can make it nearly impossible to get away from your hand. After the other players get in or out of a pot it is critical that you keep in mind what their position is, the hand ranges they play, and what sort of flops are good or bad for you. Once you have a good guess to all of those questions you can act appropriately on each successive street.
Taking the time necessary to analyze the hand before you act can save your chips. Being able to realize what is or is not a good board for your hand, and your opponents, is the key to poker. However it all comes back to taking time to think through a hand and being willing to give up if you think you are beat and putting pressure on the other player will not work. It is never too smart to predetermine what you will do with your hand before you have all the information possible.
