Consistency in String Bet Rulings
- 2-25-2008
Anyone who plays in live cash games has probably
seen somebody make a string bet. Usually a player in the hand or the
dealer has to then explain to the player what they have done wrong. There
are also times when nobody says anything and the player's action is
allowed. This is because some casinos do not have a set rule on how they
enforce string bets.
In the casino I usually play at there is no strict rule on this. There are some dealers who will call out a sting bet every time. I have also seen dealers who will call out a sting bet one time and not at other times. Then there are those who will not say anything unless it is called out by a player.
In my opinion a casino should do one of two things:
1. Always have the dealer call out a string bet.
2. Always leave it up to the player(s) involved in the hand to call out the sting bet.
If the dealers are instructed by their poker room manager to never allow sting bets there will be no confusion. The dealer will always call them out and not allow them. Then players will not have to call out their opponents and possibly start an argument.
If a poker room decides to leave it up to the players involved in the hand to call out sting bets that is fine too. If they do this then I believe that they should post this somewhere that all players will see. Also if a player not involved in the hand decides to speak up and call out a string bet, the player(s) involved in the hand will decide to allow the bet or not.
All poker rooms should have a stance on the string bet rule. There should be no confusion as to who has to call them out. It makes it a lot easier when the situation arises if everybody knows who is supposed to call out the sting bets.
