Broadway celebrity hired to create Las Vegas Bee Gees musical

World famous Broadway actor and Tony Award winner play writer, Bob Martin, has been hired by the Las Vegas tycoon Steve Wynn to work on a new musical biography of the Bee Gees. The new Las Vegas musical show is expected to include some of the band’s most memorable hits and will feature stage and musical elements similar to the ones used on the Tony Award-winning “Jersey Boys”, which introduces the audience to the band’s history by using a wide repertory of songs and visual material.

“It's a musical that celebrates the life of the Bee Gees. It's going to be the story of these three brothers who have played together since they were nine years old.” said Martin.

The Gibb brothers, Barry, Robin and Maurice formed the Bee Gees in the 1960s, recording a series of hits such as “Spicks and Specks", “To Love Somebody”, “Holiday” and "I Started A Joke", but it wasn’t until the release of successful live album, “Here at Last… The Bee Gees… Live” that the band reached the top charts worldwide. However, the turning point of their career came when they agreed to write a few songs for the famous “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack, which has sold about 40 million copies around the globe. Unfortunately, after Maurice Gibb’s sudden death in 2003, Barry and Robin declared they would never perform again as the Bee Gees.

“People associate the Bee Gees with a particular era, but they were a great R&B band before disco. It's a very complicated story. There's a 40-year history of the band, and it's a question of what's the [approach] and how do you tell that story without having a series of fragmented moments. It's challenging to tell a story like that, especially in a Vegas context, where shows tend to be shorter.” added Martin.

Martin also said that he has some ideas and that he inclines for an unusual and alternative approach that was already discussed and embraced by the two surviving Gibb brothers when he traveled to Las Vegas last month.

“They've had a very successful career and continually changed over the years. They're up for anything.” noted Martin.

The show will be exclusively created for one of Wynn's hotels on the Las Vegas Strip, however, the show does not have a name, creative team, or a projected opening date, and according to Martin, shows like this normally need a few years to finally take form.
