Betfair's Free Million Dollar Game opens 2009 World Series of Poker Europe

The 2009 World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) kicked off yesterday with the Free Million Dollar Game special event held at the Empire Casino in Leicester Square, London. Betfair's Free Million Dollar featured 18 online poker qualifiers competing for a share of the guaranteed prize pool and a place in World Series of Poker Europe history.
The action will resume today with the £1,000 NL Hold'em Four-day Event #1 and continue for the next two weeks with the remaining three bracelet events running on September 21st (Three-day Event #2- £2,500 PL Hold'em/PL Omaha), September 23rd (Three-day Event #3 - £5,000 PL Omaha) and Saturday, September 26th (Six-day Event #4 - £10,000 NL Hold’em Main Event).
As the largest and most prestigious poker tournament series held outside of the U.S, the WSOPE has rapidly gained a reputation for being one of the toughest and most exciting events in the world, attracting hundreds of poker pros every year, including Tony G, Andy Bloch, Jeff Madsen, Jennifer Harman, Brandon Adams, Allen Cunningham, Gus Hansen, Marcel Luske, Justin Bonomo, Ivo Donev, Howard Lederer, Phil Ivey, Ivan Demidov, and Jeff Lisandro. Last year's record breaking 21 hour final table witnessed Juan Juanda defeat the Russian pro Stanislaw Alekin to win the WSOPE Main Event title and the $1,539,250 first prize.
The 2009 WSOP Europe schedule also includes the inaugural Caesars Cup, an invitation-only, team-based NL Hold'em event featuring professional players from North America and Europe competing against each other in a series of individual and team challenges. This event will take place on Friday, September 25th, at 2:00 a.m. PDT. Team America will be leaded by team captain Daniel Negreanu, who will join WSOP bracelet winners Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, John Juanda, Doyle Brunson, and Jennifer Harman. Team Europe leaded by WSOPE Main event winner and team captain Annette Obrestad, 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event winner Peter Eastgate, Dario Minieri, Bertrand Grospellier, Patrik Antonius, and Ilari Sahamies. The final two players on each team will be announced in the days previous to the event.
