Beginner Pot Limit Omaha strategy
- 3-15-2010
One of the poker games exploding in popularity is Pot Limit Omaha (PLO). Pot Limit Omaha is one of the most popular games running for ring game players of all stakes. In PLO a player is dealt four hole cards and sees five community cards. A player must use two hole cards and three community cards to make their hand. With four hole cards the action can get as big, if not bigger, than a typical no limit hold’em game. It is clear that PLO is going to be a poker game that continues to be popular for a very long time. If you are a transitioning no limit hold’em player here are a few tips you may want to keep in mind as you hit the virtual felt.
Pot Limit Omaha is a game of redraws. With so many different combinations of starting hands and the requirement that players may only use three of the community cards the board is ever changing. What may be the best hand on the flop can turn into a coin flip on the turn as backdoor draws come in. The variance in PLO is amazing and multiple buy-in swings can happen at a moments notice. One strategy to minimize the risk to your bankroll on the flop and increase fold equity on the turn is to simply call any out of position raise to see a safe turn, or alternately check call if you are out of position. Once a safe card comes off on the turn you can make a big raise to push out a drawing hand. ÂÂ
Bluffing is an integral part of any poker game. In a tournament or ring game, the capability to pick up dead money when you are not catching cards is the key to survival and prosperity. As a beginning PLO player you should time your bluffs carefully and bluff when you have position. Running big bluffs can backfire in a hurry. If you are not adept at hand reading in PLO you may find that running a triple barrel bluff is nothing more than shoveling chips to your opponent.
