Avoid Overbetting while playing poker

  • 3-25-2008

WDIAV Online Poker FreerollThis is it and I am playing a $3.30 bounty tourney on Full Tilt Poker. Five minutes after the game started the blinds are 15/30 and we all starting with 1500 chips. I have A-Q in middle position. I make casual call. BB checks and the flop is K-7-A rainbow. Three people including myself made the call and the first player to act goes all in. Now why in the world would he do that? That is the dumbest move a player can make and I constantly see players making the same mistake in tourneys or poker freerolls. Why would you bet you whole stack, when we are all even in chips? And to try to steal the pot and risk being suck out on? Even if you have set, you would want to bet at least 3x blind or check raise to see what the other players do. You would want to get some chips from other players if not all. I did not want to lose my buy in this early so I folded. And so did the person last to act on the button.

As the game went on for 30 minutes I started paying attention to his moves and taking notes. He was very aggressive and I can see from previous hands that he was new to poker or just playing a careless game. He was making bets that looked like he was trying to steal. So I waited patiently so I can take some chips from him. I even wanted his bounty. I didn't want to get past 1st break and then get suck out on. I got my stack up to 4500 before the 2nd break. To my surprise he was still alive with 3852 chips. I got a good hand this time A-A. So I'm going to play a little and fool around and see what he does next. I am on the button and raise to 300 before we see the flop. He re-raised me to 900 and I call. The flop is A-K-7 with 2 hearts on board. I flop set A-A. I know I have him beat on the flop. I check so I can check-raise him. It worked. He went all in and there is no way for me to fold. I flop top set so now its showdown. He showed 7-7. The turn card was a 5 and the river card was 2. I ended up taking him out and getting his 0.50 bounty. With about 8500 chips on second break I was 3rd out of 212. I have a long ways to go with 1st paying $533. So be careful and not to over bet. It can hurt you more than help you. Unless you have a huge chip stack and it won’t hurt stack. I wouldn't go all in unless I know I have the nuts. And if you flop the nuts, don't go all in. Poker is a game of attrition, the best you can do is taking as many poker chips from the players as you can, even if it’s only a few. When I flop the nuts I will check all the way to the river and let the others bet for me. When I see the river card and know I have the nuts I will bet enough where I know he would call.
