Australian Heads-Up Championship
- 1-18-2008
Besides the Main Event of the Aussie Millions, the
Crown Casino presents another great poker tournament. The Australian Heads-Up
Championship (AUD $5.000 buy-in). This year, entrants doubled up to 64 players,
who are divided over 2 starting days. All matches are hold in “best of threeâ€Â
mode, so players have more option to modify their game and strategy.
Lee Nelson, Eric Hershler, Harry Demetriou, Roy Winston and Rafe Furst just ran through their matches and qualified for the last 16. One more round had to be played this day and at this time they went for the money. The four winners would not just qualify for Saturday, they also secure AUD $20.000. The winner will receive a check for over AUD $100.000.
Michael Watson and Mike McDonald were responsible for the funniest story of the day. They request for a delay of their Heads-Up, because of an empty stomach. They both disappear for hours and the organizer just wanted to re-schedule the match, as Michael and Mike came back and said, that the restaurant were they heading for was full and they had so find a snack bar.
The second starting day with another 32 players was scheduled today. As the only poker player Alexey Popov went to last 16 without loosing a set, but could not keep his score clear. He won 2:1 over Justin Schwarz. Surprisingly Heads-Up specialist Sorel Mizzi lost against Jeff Garza.
As the day went by 4 players remained and the
following Quarterfinal matches are going to be play tomorrow: Lee Nelson vs.
Roy Winston, Masaaki Kagawa vs. Mike McDonald, Jeff Garza vs. David Sonelin and
Alexey Popov vs Yuan Nguyen. The first round losers get AUD $20.000, Semi-Final
losers AUD $40.000, Runner-Up AUD $60.000 and the winner gets AUD
$100.000 besides the trophy and all the recognition.
