A WSOP Seat's Legal Requirement
- 5-13-2008
With the World Series of Poker just a few weeks away, many online poker rooms are busy trying to give away seats to the main event. Whether you play on one of the major online poker rooms like PokerStars or a smaller room such as Mansion Poker, chances are there are World Series of Poker qualifying matches being played. If you are lucky enough to survive the initial rounds of play and win a seat then I want to congratulate you. The amount of skill necessary to get that far is enormous. Winning a seat at the main event is probably satisfying because you not only beat thousands of people for the opportunity but also get to play in the WSOP Main Event for free.
As you probably have heard by now, the final table of the main event will be delayed. The final nine players will actually have to wait until November to square off and determine the next champion. Part of the reason for the delay is that it will allow more buzz to generate around the final table and the players will be able to round up potentially lucrative sponsorship deals.
This piece of advice is for anyone who plays in the main event by qualifying at their favorite online poker room. Read the terms and conditions. I have not read every single poker room’s requirements, but the major online poker rooms require you to wear their logo’s at all times during the main event if you won your seat through them. This means if you make it to the final table, you cannot suddenly start wearing a rival poker room’s logo, and you also probably will not receive any additional compensation from the poker room whose logo you are wearing. By playing in the particular online qualifying game and winning, you are essentially signing a contract. Your poker room gives you a seat and in exchange you wear their logo or brand. If a court finds this to be a contractual obligation then legal obligations will flow from the contract requirements. So if you are lucky enough to win a seat, just remember that you may have obligations while sitting in it.
