A Hand I will Never Forget

  • 6-4-2008

Its rare for me to talk about my poker hands with others, however, recently I was involved in the craziest poker hand of my life and feel it is appropriate to share it will all. Yesterday was my day for revenge...  It was a day that I was on the good end of a sick bad beat.  Playing a six handed, $6.50 turbo on Full Tilt Poker, I must admit I have never seen anything like this happen to me in my short poker life.  Putting bad beats on one player is harsh enough, but when you do it to two players, it’s a case for a jaw-dropping moment.

I was sitting on the button when the action fell to me.  Recently, I have been studying professional poker players play and awkward hands and decided to see if playing out of the ordinary cards could work in my favor during a regular online poker game. So like Hellmuth, I decided to just call the $30 big blind with 7-5 suited.  The small blind called and the big blind quickly checked.

The flop was golden for me, 6-5-7 rainbow. It couldn’t be better; I limped from the button, and flopped two pair.  The small blind checked rather quickly, maybe too quickly to me. The big blind bet the pot (90).  I waited 10 seconds until I announced a raise to 200. My raise to 200 clearly represents I have a solid hand.  Either I hit the flop hard, or I have a high pair. The small blind just pushed all in. At this moment I was scared, I was seriously considering a fold. It’s very easy for this guy to limp, flop a set, or possibly better on me.

What happen next is what really made me worried. The big blind called all-in as well. So with two pair, I was contemplating a fold, but in the end, I decided I was getting the right odds to call, and did so.
The Cards up put me in evidence, the Small Blind guy showed 4-8; enough for an eight high straight. The Big Blind guy showed 7-6; two pair, 7's and 6's. With 7-5; I also had two pair, however, both players had better cards and more chances to win the pot. But here comes my favorite part of the story, the Turn was a 5 and the River was another 5. I won a massive pot with four of a kind (5's). I only had a chance to win and that was getting another 5 but instead I got them both. I just wondered what are the chances to hit a hand like that again…if that’s not against all odds, then you tell me how can it be called.
