9/11 hero and NY veteran cop wins PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge
- 12-19-2009
Mike Kosowski, a New York City cop who got severely injured serving his country and his people during 9/11 attacks, has won $1 million and the first PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge Championship Title.
Kosowski was forced to retire from the NYPD in 2004 after suffering serious back and leg injuries when the World Trade Center's south tower collapsed. Kosowski had only played poker a few times before his injury, however, bored and in pain, he began playing online poker and soon he found himself playing up to six hours a day.
Then a few months ago, Kosowski heard about Fox's "PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge" and decided to to sign for the show and try his luck on the poker tables.
After submitting a quick video and securing a seat at the show, Kosowski traveled and Los Angeles to take part in the challenge, defeating model Joanna Krupa on the first round, and playing a strong game on the second round before moving to the final stage against World Series of Poker bracelet winner and Poker Stars sponsored pro Daniel Negreanu. In the final round, Kosowski defeated Negreanu taking the $1 million grand prize.
"Talk about lucky. I was one of the luckiest guys in the world to survive that day. And now this." commented Kosowski, who said he plans to use his winning to pay off his mortgage and set aside money for his two children, and help some charity institutions, including City Harvest, a non profit organization dedicated to help and feed the homeless.
PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge final episode airs December 27th on Fox Network right after the NFL game broadcast.
