40th World Series of Poker kicks off in Las Vegas with Casino Employees Event #1

The 40thWorld Series of Poker has officially kicked off yesterday with the 2 day Event #1 ($500 Casino Employees No Limit Hold’em), registering a total of 866 entries and generating a $389,700 prize pool. In 2008 the event registered a total 930 entries and generated a $418,500 prize-pool, almost 10% more than this year.

The event officially opened after a short prologue and introduction by Tournament Director Jack Effel, Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack, and professional poker player Phil Hellmuth. Several well known faces and names took part in Day 1, including poker consultant Kyle Morris, a poker consultant, Pat Poels, who won bracelets in the 2005 $1,500 Omaha Hi-Low and in the 2006 $1,000 Stud Hi-Low events, WSOP Vice President Ty Stewart; former WSOP Tournament Director and current Tournament Director at the Bellagio, Jack McClellan; WSOP Director of Operations, Gary Thompson; and 2008 Women in Poker Hall of Fame inductee, Marsha Waggoner.

Day 1 closed with a total of 785 eliminations, leaving only of the 81 players for Day 2. The casino employee event will resume at 2:00 pm and play until a winner is determined. 7% of the total entry pool will be withheld for entry fees, and 3% of the total entry pool will be withheld for tournament staff. The first place will take more than $80.000.

The 2009 World Series of Poker will continue today with the $40.000 40th Annual No Limit Hold’em Event #2, which kicks off in only a few hours. The $40,000 buy-in 4 Day event will commemorate the Series' 40th anniversary and is expected to bring some of the best players in the professional poker circuit. The tournament will be one of four filmed for broadcast by ESPN in a two-hour special show scheduled on July 28th.
