40,000 Square-Foot Church of Scientology Opens in Las Vegas
A brand-new 40,000 square-foot Church of Scientology was inaugurated in Las Vegas over the weekend by 1,500 Scientologists and their guests. This new superstructure represents a huge growth for the Vegas congregation, which was formed in the city forty years ago.
The new Las Vegas Church of Scientology, which is located at 2761 Emerson Ave., is set on five acres of desert landscape and was, at one time, a synagogue and school. Now the new church will serve its members with a state-of-the-art Public Information Center, a Sunday services chapel, spiritual counseling rooms, religious study rooms, seminar rooms, a bookstore featuring works by church founder L. Ron Hubbard, lounges and even a courtyard which will serve as a meeting place for artists and visitors.
Many high-profile visitors were on hand to dedicate the church including Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman who had this to say about the future of the new church: "Artistic creativity not only transforms the way a city is perceived, but the way its residents think of themselves. It changes their entire outlook and attitude towards life itself. That is where you play an especially vital role. Therefore as the mayor of the fastest-growing city, I look forward to partnering with you as the fastest-growing religion."
The Church of Scientology's new Vegas location is the third in the year 2010 and the eighth in the last year. A total of twelve more Churches of Scientology are scheduled to open before the end of this year.
In the closing of the dedication ceremony, Mr. David Miscavige, Chairman of the Board of Religious Technology Center said, “Yours is a city that rose out of sand to become an artistic empire and inspire the world. As such, it really is a place of dreamsâ€â€and extravagant dreams at that. So as we, too, know what it means to build upon a dream, let this new Church of Scientology signify the fact we believe in your artists, we respect the audacity of your visionâ€â€and together, we can light up this city so brightly, it will shine unto eternity.â€Â
